Weight distribution hitch setup

A weight distribution hitch that is installed but not adjusted correctly gives you none of the stability it promises. Setup is measured ride height and bar tension — not bolt-it-on-and-go.

Field notes

Tongue weight pushes the tow vehicle’s rear axle down and lifts weight off the steer axle — headlight glare, vague steering, and weak front brake bite follow. Spring bars leverage tongue weight back across the combination so the truck returns closer to its unhitched stance. Sway control is related but separate: WD reduces the conditions that feed sway; it does not magically erase every gust or pass.

Bought a WD hitch and never measured corners. Feel squat, plow, or wander after hitching. Changed trailer loading and the old bar setting no longer feels honest.

What correct setup looks like

Follow the hitch manufacturer’s setup sheet for your head, bars, and shank — we do not invent torque charts or chain-link recipes here. In the field, the honest pattern is:

  1. Measure and mark ride height at consistent points on all four corners of the tow vehicle (and note trailer stance) unhitched on level ground.
  2. Hitch, couple, and apply bar tension per the maker’s sequence — equalizer brackets, L-pins, and head tilt matter.
  3. Re-measure. Target is the tow vehicle returning close to its unhitched heights — too little tension leaves the front light; too much can unload the trailer axle instead.
  4. Confirm with a travel-loaded scale ticket when you can. Paper height without axle math still misses overload.

Sway control

Friction, dual-cam, or integrated systems are extras or built-ins depending on the hitch. Set them after basic WD geometry is honest — and never as a substitute for enough hitch weight.

After cargo changes

Batteries, water, toys, and rear bumper carriers change tongue weight. Re-check heights (and ideally re-weigh) when the load profile changes.

  • Keep the hitch maker’s setup sheet in the glovebox or phone
  • Photograph unhitched and hitched corner heights the same day
  • Verify coupler, safety chains, breakaway, and 7-pin before every trip
  • Torque and hardware checks per the hitch manual — measure on-site, do not guess foot-pounds from memory

Do I need WD on every trailer?

Is sway control the same thing?

No. WD redistributes load. Sway control resists articulation. Some products combine both.
