United Mobile RV is a Peplink Certified Associate. We treat router installs like electrical work: mounted, sealed, fused, and integrated so the system survives washboard roads, freeze–thaw seasons, and weekly tear-downs. Firmware and InControl2 management come from peplink.com only — we do not redistribute proprietary binaries.
Bonding is not the same as failover. SpeedFusion has several modes. This guide is diagnostic-first: decide what you actually need, then install clean. Hot Failover ≠ Bonding ≠ Smoothing ≠ local outbound policy — name each distinctly when you buy, configure, or troubleshoot.
Who this is for / decision frame
Right place if you
- Work or stream from the coach and cannot afford “one carrier dropped, whole day ruined.”
- Already run (or plan to run) cellular and Starlink, and want them coordinated instead of manually switching SSIDs.
- Need a travel-safe install: SIM trays accessible, Ethernet/PoE routed cleanly, power fused into coach DC — not a router zip-tied to a cabinet hinge.
- Care about honesty: SpeedFusion modes, SIM plans, and licenses matter as much as the badge on the chassis.
Maybe not yet if
- You only camp near strong cell towers and a single phone hotspot is enough.
- You only need occasional Starlink at a fixed clear-sky site and can live with one network at a time.

Decision frame (owner + tech):
- Map how you actually roam (highway corridors vs deep forest vs desert BLM).
- List WANs you can realistically feed the router: cellular SIM(s), Starlink Ethernet WAN, optional campground Wi-Fi as a designed-in WAN.
- Decide policy: local failover / outbound priority vs SpeedFusion Hot Failover vs Bonding vs Smoothing — and name the mode you will actually configure.
- Budget clean power, RF hygiene, and (if bonding) a real SpeedFusion peer or SpeedFusion Connect plan — half of RV reliability is placement and power, not the logo.
SpeedFusion honesty (what the brochure skips)
Peplink “multi-WAN” covers more than one technology. Say the mode out loud when you buy, configure, or troubleshoot.
1) Local multi-WAN outbound policy (no SpeedFusion tunnel)
Priority, weighted balance, and related outbound rules steer sessions across WANs on the router itself. No remote peer required. This is enough for many coaches that need a sticky primary (usually cellular near towers) and a backup (Starlink or second cell) when the primary dies.
Limitation: classic failover can still drop some VPN/VoIP sessions during the handoff. Fine for browsing and email; weaker for “never drop the call.”
2) SpeedFusion Hot Failover
Builds a SpeedFusion/PepVPN tunnel with a peer (another Peplink, FusionHub, or Peplink SpeedFusion Connect/Cloud). Standby paths stay ready; traffic flips when health checks fail so sessions are far more likely to survive.
Use when uptime and session persistence matter more than raw Mbps.
3) SpeedFusion Bandwidth Bonding
Packet-level aggregation across WANs inside the SpeedFusion tunnel (peer required). Can raise usable throughput for bulk transfers when links are healthy and latency is not wildly mismatched.
Starlink + cellular reality: Starlink’s latency and jitter often swing more than terrestrial LTE/5G. Bonding those two for Zoom, Teams, Wi-Fi calling, or RDP can look great on a speed test and feel worse in the meeting — the receiver spends time reordering packets. Prefer Hot Failover or careful outbound policy for interactive traffic; reserve bonding for bulk upload/download when links are closer in behavior. Never promise 2× speed.
4) WAN Smoothing
Sends redundant copies across active WANs and keeps the first good copy. Excellent for jitter/loss-sensitive traffic. Honesty: you burn more metered data because duplicates ride multiple pipes.
5) Dynamic Weighted Bonding (firmware feature)
Down-weights congested or failing links inside a bonded tunnel so one bad WAN hurts the whole pipe less. Still not magic if outdoor RF or sky view is trash.
License / Care honesty (PrimeCare)
Many higher-tier mobile chassis include Hot Failover / Bonding / Smoothing in the hardware story. Entry models (commonly BR1 Mini, some BR2 / BR2 Micro, B One class) may need an active PrimeCare subscription or a feature pack before those SpeedFusion modes unlock. Verify the invoice and datasheet for that exact SKU — do not assume the brochure feature list is what powers on after unboxing.
Always document what was configured: Hot Failover ≠ Bonding ≠ Smoothing ≠ local outbound-only failover.

Chassis family map (roles, not a fake SKU catalog)
Exact model pick is quote- and coach-specific. Conceptual roles only — no invented watt / dB / SKU matrices here.
MAX BR1 / BR1 Mini / BR1 Pro
Single-cellular workhorses. Mini for tight cabinets; Pro when you need higher cellular throughput. Confirm which SpeedFusion modes are included vs Care/license.
MAX BR2 / BR2 Pro / BR2 Micro
Dual-cellular diversity (two modems/carriers) plus Ethernet/Wi-Fi WANs — strong when cell-map fill matters as much as Starlink.
MAX Transit / Transit Duo / Transit Pro
Passenger/vehicle-oriented enclosures and I/O; same multi-WAN philosophy, different mechanical fit.
Balance (branch/fixed)
Usually not the coach box — often the HQ / FusionHub peer that terminates SpeedFusion for Hot Failover or Bonding.
Pepwave mobile products sit under the same Peplink support and firmware tree. Manage fleets with InControl2.
NE / on-site (do not invent numbers here): idle and load watts, fuse sizing for that chassis on that coach DC path, antenna model/band (dBi is model- and band-specific), and per-kit Starlink Ethernet topology. Quote after measurement — not a single blog number.
Diagnostic-first: measure before you buy
1) Travel pattern inventory
Nights near towns vs forests/canyons vs desert. Cell-first corridors reward low-latency cellular. Remote nights reward Starlink. Mixed months reward a Peplink policy that matches reality.
2) Existing WAN health (before the router)
Cellular: stand outside the coach on each carrier you might SIM. Bars + real speed tests. Peplink cannot amplify RF; dead outdoor cell needs placement or a booster only when signal is weak-but-present (weBoost guide). Starlink: clear-sky potential at typical parks — trees and eaves win every argument (Starlink RV guide). Campground Wi-Fi: optional designed-in WAN only — captive portals and congestion are normal.
3) Coach power and space
Fused DC near the install zone, ventilation, path for Ethernet and cellular antenna leads. Dirty power and shared noisy circuits create flaky radios. Clean power, chafe-protected routing, interference/placement checks are half the reliability story.
4) Latency vs throughput
Video calls hate jitter even when megabits look fine. Near towers, prefer cellular priority. Where towers vanish, Starlink carries. Match SpeedFusion mode to that truth.
5) SIM and plan logistics: router-legal SIMs, dual-modem access after cabinetry closes, labeled trays, service loops.
SIM / data-plan honesty
- Many consumer phone plans forbid routers or throttle hard once they see modem traffic. Read the ToS. Prefer router-rated / dedicated data plans when you can get them.
- Bonding and Smoothing can increase metered usage (multiple paths or duplicate packets). Budget for that.
- Dual-SIM diversity is coverage insurance, not automatic double speed.
- Set InControl2 / usage alerts so a failed primary does not silently burn the backup plan overnight.
- Leave labeled physical/eSIM access after the cabinet is finished — future you at 10 p.m. matters.
Buying / kit architecture
Peplink aggregates WANs — typically SIM/cellular + Starlink, optional campground Wi-Fi — and presents one LAN/Wi-Fi to the coach. Configure the named mode you need: local outbound failover, SpeedFusion Hot Failover, Bonding, and/or Smoothing.
- Cellular modem path(s) — SIM(s) in the Peplink; external antennas when the shell shields radios.
- Starlink as WAN — official Starlink Ethernet adapter or Starlink router LAN port → Peplink WAN. Keep the PoE/power path brownout-aware (inverter surge and long thin runs drop dishes and confuse health checks). Exact port map is kit-generation specific (NE on site).
- Optional Wi-Fi as WAN — client mode when designed in; never your only plan.
- LAN / coach Wi-Fi — one SSID beats three hotspots.
- Power — fused DC sized from Peplink docs and measured on that coach path; modem on that same chassis fused feed (not a separate lighter/noisy tap); Starlink PoE injector on its own fused path; strain-relieved; labeled. No single universal amp number in this guide.
- Management — InControl2 / firmware from peplink.com only.
- SpeedFusion peer (if using Hot Failover / Bonding / Smoothing) — second Peplink, FusionHub, or SpeedFusion Connect — plus any Care/license the chassis requires.
SpeedFusion / multi-WAN mode tradeoffs (OEM only)
Local outbound failover only
Upside: simple; no peer required. Cost / risk: some sessions still drop on handoff.
SpeedFusion Hot Failover
Upside: session-friendly uptime. Cost / risk: needs peer + healthy secondary WAN.
Bonding
Upside: throughput / resilience for bulk when links match. Cost / risk: peer + possible Care/license; Starlink+cell can hurt interactive apps.
Smoothing
Upside: jitter/loss resilience. Cost / risk: higher data use.
Dual cellular + Starlink
Upside: carrier diversity + satellite. Cost / risk: cost, roof real estate, power draw (measure on site).
Campground Wi-Fi alone
Upside: cheap when it works. Cost / risk: captive portals, congestion, no travel continuity.
What not to buy into
- Assuming “multi-WAN” means Bonding. Name the mode: local outbound failover, Hot Failover, Bonding, or Smoothing.
- Ladder-rack “installs” with dangling PoE and unfused cigarette-plug power.
- Firmware from random mirrors.
- Assuming entry-chassis SpeedFusion modes are unlocked without Care/feature pack (PrimeCare honesty).

Install sequence (stepwise)
Treat this like electrical work. Order matters.
Pre-job
- Confirm WANs on site: outdoor cellular usability, Starlink sky view, optional Wi-Fi plan.
- Pick mount location: ventilation, antenna lead length, SIM service access, away from microwave ovens and noisy inverters when possible.
- Isolate circuits you will tap; verify battery/alternator behavior under load; plan fuse sizing from chassis documentation + on-site measurement (Network Engineer / install tech — no invented single amp rating here).
Mechanical & cable
- Mount the router with proper fasteners — no zip-tie hinge specials.
- Route Ethernet and antenna leads with drip loops, chafe protection, and service loops. Seal exterior penetrations properly.
- Separate noisy power runs from RF leads where practical. Keep cellular antennas isolated from Starlink routing and weBoost outdoor antennas — crowding one roof corner creates “bad firmware” tickets that are really RF.
Power integration
- Land on a fused DC feed sized for that chassis and path. Label the fuse. Cellular modem current rides that same chassis fused DC with the router — do not park the modem or an antenna amp on a separate cigarette-lighter / shared noisy circuit while the chassis feed looks “clean.”
- Keep the Starlink PoE injector on its own fused path (brownout-aware); do not share it with the router/modem DC tap.
- Verify clean voltage under load (A/C start, inverter surge, winch). Brown-outs reset sessions and flap WAN health checks.
- If AC is used, use a proper receptacle circuit — not a daisy-chained strip behind bedding.
WAN bring-up
- Insert SIMs; connect Starlink via official Ethernet path (adapter or router LAN → Peplink WAN); confirm PoE/power path is stable.
- Update firmware / confirm InControl2 from peplink.com only.
- Configure the named policy: outbound priority and/or SpeedFusion Hot Failover / Bonding / Smoothing as designed — including peer and license checks.
- Optional: campground Wi-Fi as WAN below trusted links.
- Document SSIDs, WAN priorities, configured SpeedFusion mode, fuse location, and SIM carriers for the owner.
Travel-safe finish
- Strain-relieve every cable; clamp against vibration; photograph the layout.
- Road-test: cell-only, Starlink-only, then intentional failover / bonding behavior before calling it done.
Starlink pairing note: Starlink does not replace cellular everywhere. It pairs with cell via Peplink multi-WAN. Clear sky still wins for the dish; the router only manages the pipe. Starlink = install capability only (mount, cable routing, power integration, aim/setup) — not a “Starlink Certified” or partner title; no partner logos.
Optimize / failure modes
Healthy system signs
- Devices stay on one coach SSID while WANs change underneath.
- Failover or SpeedFusion behavior matches what was documented (named mode).
- No random reboots when the inverter surges.
- SIM and Ethernet connectors still tight after washboard.
Common failure modes
Wrong mental model
Expecting Bonding from outbound-only failover (or the reverse). Re-read policy; name the mode: Hot Failover ≠ Bonding ≠ Smoothing ≠ local outbound.
Missing SpeedFusion peer / license
Bonding or Hot Failover configured in the UI but peer Care/Connect/FusionHub never finished. Looks like “Peplink is broken.”
WAN Health Check flaps
Single brittle health-check target, brownout power, or marginal RF causes flapping. Fix power/RF and diversify health checks.
Starlink behind trees
Router LEDs look fine; WAN is garbage. Fix sky / mount first.
Dead outdoor cell
Measure outside; booster only for weak-but-present signal.
Dirty power / PoE brownout
Shared circuits, undersized conductors, long thin PoE runs, or modem/antenna amp on a lighter tap while the chassis feed looks clean. Keep modem on chassis fused DC; Starlink PoE on its own fuse. Clean power is half of reliability.
RF self-interference
Cellular, Starlink, and weBoost antennas stacked. Placement checks matter.
Captive-portal Wi-Fi as primary
Optional WAN only.
Firmware drift
Random downloaded images. Stay on peplink.com.
Unlabeled spaghetti
Label WAN ports, SIMs, and fuses.
Optimization habits
- Revisit WAN priority after major seasonal route changes.
- Keep a cheat sheet: fuse ID, SIM carriers, configured SpeedFusion mode, Starlink account recovery, InControl2 org note.
- After any roof work, re-check antenna routes, seals, and isolation.
DIY boundary vs book UMRT
Reasonable DIY
- Account setup, SSID naming, basic WAN priority on a pre-installed router.
- Speed tests and noting which parks kill which WAN.
- Cable dressing inside cabinets without new penetrations or fuse-panel work if you are competent and follow manufacturer docs.
Book United Mobile RV when

Is Hot Failover the same as Bonding?
No. Hot Failover, Bonding, Smoothing, and local outbound policy are distinct. Ask what was actually configured — and document it.

Will Peplink keep me online in the trees?
No router invents clear sky or outdoor cell. Peplink coordinates the WANs you actually have. No miracle uptime.
